PMI Board of Directors
PMI is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, comprised of 15 member-elected directors who serve three-year terms. Three directors, who are elected by others on the Board each year, serve as officers of the Institute. The collective wisdom, experience, diversity and passion of the Board ultimately sets and executes PMI’s core ideology: our core purpose — PMI’s reasons for being, and our core values — the essential and enduring principles that guide PMI. Our vitality and relevance is driven by the PMI Board and its volunteers.
PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF)
PMIEF has volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Volunteers have the opportunity to make a difference, meet new people, strengthen their skill-sets, and earn professional development units (PDUs) toward maintaining their PMI certifications.
Volunteers support and advance the PMIEF’s mission to promote economic, educational, cultural and social advancement through the application, development and promotion of project management concepts, theories and life skills.
Insight Teams
In support of strategic focus, customer centricity and organization agility, Insight Teams support business units by providing subject matter expertise and stakeholder insight to a business area. This includes helping teams turn data and information into intelligence and thru careful assessment of the data, provide insights on “what comes next”. The “Insights” teams share provide a deep understanding of the truth and a catalyst for creating new value for our members and customers.
Region Mentors
In an effort to support our chapters throughout the world, 21 region mentors throughout the world provide guidance and leadership to PMI chapter leaders, helping them to develop their leadership capabilities and ensure compliance with PMI policies and directives.
Region mentors support chapter formation, participate in outreach and advocacy efforts and support chapter leaders through communication, collaboration and education.
Standards Committees
As the project management profession evolves, we continue to expand and update our library of globally recognized standards. PMI standards are developed through a voluntary consensus process that brings together volunteers and subject matter experts with an interest in the standards’ topics.
This process includes committee meetings, standards program working sessions and exposure drafts, and is part of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) compliance.

Exam Development Volunteers
PMI seeks volunteers to participate in exam development workshops conducted at least once a year in each of the four geographical regions. Participants are randomly selected based on specific selection criteria such as geographic area, years certified, industry and member status.
At these workshops, selected volunteer subject matter experts (SMEs) may be asked to write, review and edit questions for possible use in future PMI certification exams, and/or verify that translations of the certification exams maintain the original intent of the questions.
PMI Awards Evaluators
PMI awards evaluators are virtual volunteers whose commitment makes the PMI professional awards program possible. Volunteers from around the globe represent the world of organizations that rely on project management for success.
Award volunteers use their expertise to independently evaluate award submissions, using the provided award description and confidential evaluation guidelines and rating sheets.

Presenters at PMI Events
Attendees at PMI events hone their skills by learning from and sharing with experts. PMI recruits volunteers regularly to present information or share their experience at events such as global congresses, PMI conferences, chapter events and leadership meetings.
PMI Publication Reviewers
PMI offers a variety of publications with timely updates and powerful knowledge content to keep project management professionals informed and to help them succeed. We need volunteers to review submissions for these publications:
- Knowledge Shelf is a growing resource of articles contributed by project managers to advance the body of knowledge. A panel of volunteer practitioners reviews each article for value and readability prior to posting.
- Bookstore reviewers are asked to review particular offerings of third-party published exam preparation books and materials for sale at the PMI Store.
- Project Management Journal® reviewers contribute to Project Management Journal (PMJ), our peer-refereed academic and research publication. PMJ’s international and multi-disciplinary review team helps choose papers with a continued standard of excellence in terms of quality of content and reputation among the academic community.
Chapter Volunteers
Through local PMI chapters, members meet their peers, make new contacts, network, build knowledge, share solutions and ideas, and enjoy activities and events. Volunteer positions with our local chapter range from formal positions (such as president, secretary, vice president of membership, vice president of professional development, vice president of finance and volunteer coordinator) to less formal positions assisting with various events, chapter programs and committees.
These positions offer an exceptional opportunity to build your leadership skills.
