Lunch and Learn: PMI Pulse of Profession 2020

Power Skills
PMI (2020). Ahead of the Curve: Forging a Future-Focused Culture. Pulse of the Profession.
Data from the 2020 Pulse of the Profession® reveal that 11.4 percent of investment is wasted due to poor project performance.
With so much at stake—and so much in flux—organizations must rethink some fundamental questions.
Future-fit organizations are not only willing to reimagine their vision and purpose, but also eager to adopt new ways of thinking that will allow them to thrive in The Project Economy.
Although project leaders need not engineer new solutions, they must have enough technological know-how to assess progress, review deliverables and advocate for the customer. Project professionals are leading cross-functional teams and delivering without dependencies on other areas of the business.
When it comes to value delivery, organizations that are highly mature in their capabilities the Pulse shows that they outperform those that are not on key performance metrics. Project professionals at these organizations are incorporating a mix of project approaches, including customer-centered approaches to explore and solve problems.
Senior leaders must be sure to take a strategic approach to incorporating newer approaches, not just rush to grab onto the next shiny object. They must also prioritize developing a culture that values project management by supporting their talent in the pursuit of certification and nurturing them as build their skillsets - especially leadership and people skills - to meet the project demands of tomorrow.
